An early morning fire on Sunday in Onitsha, Anambra, killed a
couple and destroyed household furniture and fittings worth more than
N10 million. Mr Benjamin Wordu, the Police Area Commander in Onitsha,
Wordu said he had yet to receive comprehensive briefing on the incident
and the cause.
He, however, stated that the police had
commenced preliminary investigation into the incident.
An
eyewitness in the area told NAN that the fire started at about 5 a.m.
The
eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said the fire was put off at about
11 a.m. by the combined efforts of men of the state fire service and
people living in the neighbourhood.
”We came out when we heard
people shouting for help, but we were constrained by the fortified gate
and high walls of the building.
”Before help could come, the
couple had suffocated to death in the thick smoke from the fire, which
engulfed the entire building,” the eyewitness said.
NAN learnt
that one of the deceased, popularly known as Bonanza Ndubuisi, was a
leading importer in Main Market, Onitsha.
He and his late wife,
Caroline, returned to their residence in Onitsha from Enugu two days ago
before meeting their untimely death.
