From KEMI YESUFU, ABUJA
On Thursday March 28, the International Conference Center (ICC),
Abuja sparkled as a large gathering of top celebrities converged at the
venue for the Vlisco women awards. Established in Holland in 1846,
Vlisco (originally known as Holandis) is a leading fabric brand across
Africa, most especially, Nigeria.
This explains why fashionistas from all over the country ensured that
they made an impression at the event organized by the company to
commemorate the International Women’s Day (IWD). The Vlisco women award
is the culmination of activities packaged by the fabric makers to show
the honour and respect it has for the womenfolk in the country.
Top management of Vlisco came all the way from The Netherlands to be
part of the event. But it was HR/Business Development Director of the
company, Yvonne Chioke who coordinated the award presentation ceremony.
Though, all five women were given awards, it was Eugenia Abu who emerged
the voter’s choice for 2013. Once Chioke announced Eugenia’s name, her
friends and well-wishers went into a loud celebration. Joke Sylva was
not left out as she was also called on stage to receive her plaque.
The three other awardees were unavoidably absent. Speaking on her
emergence as the voter’s choice, Eugenia said: “I don’t know how to
describe the way I feel being picked among other highly distinguished
women.” Countless congratulatory handshakes and hugs came her way, but
Eugenia still had time to advice young girls who want to succeed in
life. “When young women are given a job, they should carry out their
duties without thinking of a reward.
If you show that much commitment, people will surely celebrate you,”
she said. For Joke Silva whose radiant looks earned her compliments,
youths must inculcate the culture of hard work. According to her, the
get rich quick mentality should be jettisoned. Also speaking on the
sterling qualities of the awardees, Chioke opined that all five of them
have inspired loads of young people.
“We are here to celebrate women who have not only succeeded in their
chosen fields but have also done it in such a manner that they inspired
others. I am happy about the large turn out tonight. You can see that
women are beautifully dressed and they are enjoying themselves,” he
said. Indeed, it was a night that women let down their guard for a fun
time out.
MC Ayuba dished out rib cracking jokes. When it was time for music,
elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu gave a scintillating performance as
guests danced joyfully with a few joining her on stage. Songs like Ekwe,
Iyo Gogo, Bia Nulu and One Love had guests on their feet each time she
handled the microphone.
