Selena Gomez's Bindi Blunder At The MTV Movie Awards
If you’re going through life as a celebrity, chances are at one point or another, you’re going to offend someone and that’s exactly what Selena Gomez did.On Sunday night, the actress/singer performed at the MTV Movie Awards. Her Indian-themed performance of “Come and Get It” went off without a hitch at the time, but ever since then, Gomez has been receiving a ton of criticism over her choice of accessories, namely the bindi she wore on her head. Leaders at the Universal Society of Hinduism have come after Selena for her inappropriate use of the bindi: "The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance," Rajan Zed told World Entertainment News Network. "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol. . . . It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."
In other words, you’re not going to be seeing any bindis at Forever 21 and the religious adornment has no place on Selena’s perfectly-styled head. To be fair though, she probably didn’t pick it out herself. By now everyone is aware that this kind of thing is done by professional stylists, so maybe Gomez isn’t the one to blame. Then again, she might want to reconsider her comments after the performance. When asked about it, Selena said that “that her costume would be "glam tribal" and her song was "very European and has a lot of island-y sounds." That’s a whole list of cultures that don’t have a place in a sentence, referring to an Indian-themed performance.
Before the show, Selena posed on the red carpet in more appropriate attire.
