Choge, Dies At 80
A renowned Hausa female singer and songwriter, Hajiya Sa'adatu Aliyu, popularly known as Barmani Choge, has died at the age of 80 in Funtua town of Katsina State.
Alhaji Hamza Aliyu, one of her children, who confirmed the death to newsmen on Monday, said the deceased died at her residence following a protracted illness on Saturday.


She was well-traveled in Northern Nigeria where she performed her songs both in public and in private ceremonies.
She first started out singing religious songs mostly of the Sufi order and with a repetitive style, then she usually accompanied older women in singing before branching out on her own.
Choge was born in Funtua, Katsina State. She was based in the city where she resided with her family. She is survived by six children and 60 grandchildren.
The late Barmani Choge had been buried according to Islamic rites. Choge spent 52 years of her life composing various Hausa songs.
