Sultan under fire over Islamists amnesty call
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, may have made the call
in good faith. But he is literally under attack for making it.
Some Christian leaders rose up in arms against the leader of the Muslim community in Nigeria, at the weekend, for his call for amnesty for members of the Islamist group, Boko Haram, terrorising some northern states.

Boko Haram: Plot to shoot down Jonathan’s plane foiled
…Massive arms including anti-aircraft guns, rocket propelled grenades
recovered after visit to Borno…
It would have been a national tragedy had it occurred. But, according to intelligence sources, security agencies saved the situation.
The story is that insurgents allegedly planned to attack the plane of President Goodluck Jonathan while flying into Maiduguri, Borno State capital, on Thursday for his two-day visit.

JESUS IS THE MESSIAH 2
This “obnoxious” “offensive” Jesus, the man you love
to hate, is the Messiah.
I wish I had been there as a fly on the wall at the time of
Jesus. You had to be there to understand the excitement; the
pandemonium Jesus caused among the pastors, bishops and popes of the
day. You can cause no greater excitement than by doing the
impossible. That is precisely what Jesus did.
He set the ball rolling by healing a leper. Then he sent the
healed man to the religious establishment: “He charged him to tell no
one, ‘But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for
your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded.’
However, the report went around concerning him all the more; and great
multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their
infirmities. So he himself often withdrew into the wilderness.” (Luke
5:14-16).
The dwindling population of genuine role models in Nigeria (2)
I know that the temptation to have a big bank account and other
trappings of material comfort may be very difficult to resist,
especially if such benefits can be had easily just by associating with
people that have the necessary financial wherewithal and “right
connections.” Yet the Igbo saying that ezigbo aha ka ego (good name is
superior to riches) captures a powerful existential insight about life
which should guide individual conduct at every level.

…Grant amnesty to sect— Sultan
…Ghosts don’t need pardon—Jonathan
Last Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan responded to the request of Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar pleading for amnesty for members of Boko Haram. The President insisted during a State Visit to Borno State that people who need amnesty must come to the open. However, the Sultan’s request was within the context of the insinuation that the leadership of the North was not doing enough to stem the tide of violence occasioned by the violence perpetrated by Boko Haram.

After water summit, what next?
On Monday February 18, 2013,the federal Ministry of Water Resources
organized a Presidential Summit in Abuja. The event was well attended as
it attracted the nation’s number one citizen and a host of other
dignitaries described on the occasion as stakeholders.
They made pronouncements which showed expert knowledge of the challenges of managing water in a complex and large society like Nigeria. As in most subject areas, inadequate funding was identified as a major constraint. Although the water sector gets an average of N39 billion in our annual budget, President Jonathan himself acknowledged that the sector requires a commitment of N350 billion.
In a way, the summit can be said to be a good initiative; if for nothing else, it illuminated the scope and challenges of our water needs. That appears to be how far we can go in being charitable about the summit. This is because there is no evidence that any progress may come the way of water resources with the same budget as that of last year, which is one tenth what the summit says is needed to fix the sector. That government has many needs and cannot meet them all at a go is a good argument; it is however a different ball game if government does not disburse its funds proportionately to its needs.

Wicked humour
My favourite genre of entertainment is comedy; I like to laugh; I
like funny people and I am sometimes considered very silly by those very
close to me. It is always surprising to hear people describe me as very
serious and even austere. I think life for the most part is serious;
reality is a mixed bag of events that will either reduce you to tears or
have you double up in laughter.
I have no control over the happenstances of the world so I roll with the punches. But I can at least control my own entertainment and my choices are determined by the laughter quotient. I am intrigued by involuntary actions and reactions that are comedic and lately I have been inundated by quite a few. There is comedy that comes from entertainment and there is the natural occurring comedy. This is when spontaneous responses and accidents lead to mirth and I have chosen to brand this type of comedy, wicked humour. Its wicked because most of the time the laughter is at someone else’s expense.

“I am, because we are”. -Ubuntu Philosophy
A Zulu philosophy that explains that a person with ubuntu knows his or her place in the universe and is consequently able to interact gracefully with other individuals. One aspect of ubuntu is that, at all times, the individual effectively represents the people from among whom he or she comes, and therefore tries to behave according to the highest standards and exhibits the virtues upheld by his or her society.
It was because of ubuntu tenants that South Africa was able to proceed and heal the nation in the aftermath of apartheid. It was a cleansing medium that some say, without it, there could not have been reconciliation between the Whites and the Blacks.

Conversation around The Third Wave of Nigerian Poets with Obu Udeozo (2)
What would you say is the defining character of The Third Wave of
Nigeria Poets?
We have to be careful at this point. If there were no defining characteristics there will be no need for the differentiation in the first instance. And such dissociative markers do not lend themselves to very neat summaries; because they are several. So we may peep at their watermarks.

Concerning Project Nollywood
The $200m intervention fund offers Nollywood the opportunity to
put its house in order for a relaunch
President Goodluck Jonathan last week went beyond lip service to take
the long overdue step of providing funds to further leverage Nigeria’s
fledgling home video industry. This came in the form of $200 million for
a special progamme tagged Project Nollywood. The grant, which has
created a lot of excitement in the movies industry, falls within the
administration’s planned assistance to a sector that is expected to
generate considerable income to the nation while providing employment to
many.
Is Poverty Really Behind Terrorism?

Simon
Kolawole Live!: Email: simon.kolawole@thisdaylive.com
Let me scare you a bit – crude oil ittle did it occur to me that my side note on “Poverty and Terrorism” last week was going to generate significant interest. I had said poverty makes recruiting terrorists easy, but disagreed that the primary factor is poverty, as suggested by President Bill Clinton. I received reactions from people whose viewpoints I respect a lot. Most of them disagreed with me. They thought I was trying to play down the poverty factor in terrorism. Without poor people, they argued, the terrorists would have no foot soldiers to recruit. Without foot soldiers, terrorism will be incapacitated. I have, therefore, decided to expatiate on my position today.

My lover is my worst enemy, cries out Spanish duped by Nigerian lover
…Lady dupes boyfriend after luring him from Spain
Money is indeed the root of evil. Or why would a lady lure her lover all the way from Spain to fleece him? Ada Joy Okafor, 28, was repatriated from Spain about a year ago but really wanted to go back to the European country. She solicited the help of her Spanish lover, Jose Anthonio Murili Turrilo, to secure a visa.
Meanwhile, Ada began another relationship in Nigeria with 25-year-old Kenny Oyewmina. In February, the lady invited her Spanish lover to Nigeria and was lodged in a hotel in Benin-City where Ada and her Nigerian boyfriend also lodged.

Police On The Hunt For Man Who Wears Female Undies Around, Exposes Himself To Females
Police are currently on the hunt for a
man in a thong who has been running around, exposing himself and
terrorizing neighbourhoods.
“We’re looking
for an individual who we have titled the ‘Thong Bandit,’” District 1
Commander Paul Pazen said. “He is fully clothed somewhere in the mouth
of an alley, will disrobe down to a thong and expose himself further in
front of female citizens in northwest Denver.”
The sick bandit originally started targeting women last summer but hasn’t been seen for months until he reappeared in February. He’s been named the “Thong Bandit” by police and media
“It’s a crime to expose yourself to folks,” Pazen continued. “We need to make sure that he doesn’t take that next step. “We look for patterns – day of week, time of day, weather conditions – to see if we could guess when an individual will try to perpetrate a crime,” Commander Pazen explained to NBC News. “It’s very difficult to try to guess what a human being is thinking, and here, those challenges are even greater when you have somebody who thinks it’s OK to run around in a thong.”

Nigeria: Islamist Group 'Executes' Foreign Hostages
Nigeria-based Islamist group Ansaru
said on Saturday it had killed seven foreign hostages it seized on
February 7 from a construction company in Nigeria, SITE Monitoring
Service said.
The
group issued a statement in Arabic and English on an affiliate of the
Sinam al-Islam network accompanied by screen shots of a video purporting
to show the dead hostages, SITE said. One screenshot showed a man with
gun standing above several prone figures lying on the ground, reports
Reuters.
Ansaru, which has kidnapped other foreigners in the past, had blasted into the compound using explosives and abducted a Briton, an Italian, a Greek and four Lebanese workers, the largest number of foreigners kidnapped in the mostly Muslim north since an insurgency by Islamist militants intensified two years ago.

Uhuru Kenyatta Kenya’s President-Elect
Uhuru Kenyatta was elected Kenya’s new
president, despite facing an international crimes against humanity
trial for violence in the last polls, provisional election commission
figures showed Saturday.
Kenyatta,
who becomes the African country’s new leader 50 years after his
independence hero father, Kenya’s founding president, took 50.03 percent
of the vote, according to constituency tallies released in the early
hours of Saturday. Kenyatta, who won 6,173,433 votes out of a total
12,338,667 ballots cast, broke the 50 percent threshold by only 4,099
votes. His rival Prime Minister Raila Odinga trailed in second place
with 43.28 percent, and a total of 5,340,546 votes. A formal
announcement was expected later Saturday, but the figures were shown on
an official election commission electronic scoreboard that compiled
results from all 291 constituencies. The 51-year-old outgoing deputy
prime minister — charismatic, able to appeal to all classes and one of
Africa’s richest men — is the first leader to take power whilst facing
trial in The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC). Kenyatta,
whose first name means “freedom” in Swahili, beat by over 800,000 votes
his opponent Raila Odinga, the 68-year-old outgoing prime minister who
was on his third failed bid at the top job. As Kenyatta’s supporters
hugged and cheered in victory celebrations when the numbers were
released, concerns were high as to how Odinga

Maheeda: The Inspiring Story Of Prostitute-Turned Gospel Singer
The story of Caroline Sam, the gospel
singer popularly known as Maheeda, is pathetic but inspiring. She was
raised as an orphan who hit the street at a tender age of 13 to fend for
herself during which time she became a prostitute. In fact, Maheeda
could not ascertain her real names because she was raised by foster
parents whose name she adopted.
Now,
things have changed as Maheeda has turned her life around and
eventually became someone to reckon with in the music industry.
The light skinned and slim built mother of one stormed the music scene about two years ago with a single, Oko Yapa that rocked the airwaves. Indeed, Maheeda attracted attention not because her song was extra-ordinary but because of the fact that she appeared weird so much that her almost nude pictures were everywhere, and she was living big.
Recently, the ‘Naija Bad Girl’ as she’s used to be called, turned a new creature by giving her life to Christ, which has made her embrace gospel music as against the secular that shot her into the limelight.
TS Weekend engaged the talented singer in an interview session and she opened up on a number of interesting issues that include her experience as a prostitute, her growing up as an orphan and her marriage to a Whiteman. She also spoke extensively about the turning point of her life as well as her music career.
What is happening to Maheeda?
That depends on what you mean particularly.

5 years after: Sunny Neji opens up on his GLO ambassadorship saga
Sunny Neji popularly known as Mr. Fantastik became a Glo ambassador
in 2008 alongside other artistes like D’banj, Pasuma and Sammy Okposo.
But while they were still on the bill, Neji’s contract was however, not
renewed. The decision not to renew the Ogoja, Cross River State-born
singer’s contract reportedly worth N20million at inception, was not
unconnected with his perceived declining rating and relevance in the
music industry.
It was also said that Neji has not hit a commercial height since the release of his 2006 album, Off Da Hook. However, five years after the controversy that trailed the termination of the contract, Neji has come out to put the record straight. He also talks about his music, the UN Peace Ambassador award which he received recently, and his plans to delve into movie production in future.
What are you doing at the moment?
I’m currently planning to sign on new artistes to work under my label called Impact. Even though the environment has been unfriendly, I’m trying as much as possible to adapt to the system that we find ourselves today.
You celebrated your birthday anniversary recently by giving out an iphone 5 to the best writer of your quiz competition. What are we expecting from you this year?
I’m yet to decide on the kind of project I would want to embark on this year. For the iphone 5, most people didn’t believe I was determined to give out an iphone until someone won the gift. Naturally, I love giving and it is the only way you can show your love to humanity.
But in Nigeria today; it has become a regular practice where recognitions are accorded to undeserving individuals.
As one of the new UN Peace Ambassadors, do you think some of your colleagues that made the list merited the award?
