A Federal High Court in Ibadan on
Friday sentenced a 20-year-old tailor turned drug trafficker, Fatai
Adetoro, to seven months imprisonment for being in possession of 800g of
cannabis.
Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo found Mr. Adetoro guilty of the crime and sentenced him to imprisonment at the Oyo prison without an option of fine.
The judge said that her decision followed the evidence before her and the guilty plea of the convict and ordered that the sentence was to commence from the day he was arrested.
“I have, however, considered that the convict is a first time offender and that he had undergone counseling from the NDLEA,’’ she said.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Bridget Viashimah, had told the court that Mr. Adetoro was arrested at Iseyin, Oyo State, by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Mrs. Viashimah said that the convict was intercepted on November 15, 2012 at about 7a.m. in possession of 800g of Indian hemp.
She said that the offence contravened and was punishable under Section 19 of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge, but pleaded for leniency.
“I have been in detention since November 15, 2012 and I have learnt my lesson. I promise to go back to tailoring if the court will pardon me,’’ he said.
The judge, nonetheless, found Mr. Adetoro guilty and convicted him accordingly.
