Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, praised the police for giving to the country products like the only Nigerian individual Olympic Gold Medalist, Chioma Ajunwa, the former world heavy weight boxing Champion, Samuel Peters among many others.
“I believe these games will also lead to the emergence of excellent sporting talents and create awareness in sports development in the country,” he said.
He also urged competitors at the games to be disciplined, focused and avoid all cheatings by adhering to the norms of the games.
In his welcome address, the Chief Host and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, thanked President Jonathan for the assistance he provided in making the event a success.
He also said praised the Rivers State Government and other sponsors for their assistance which had made the games a reality.
The IG noted that the games had in the past nurtured sportsmanship in the past and produced sporting heroes and expressed the hope that more talents would be discovered in the current game.
Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, also welcomed participants to the state, adding that the state was committed to sports development.
He also said the games would enhance the fitness of officers and men of the force, and also increase their readiness to fight crime in the country.
The colourful opening ceremony Sunday also featured various displays including the guard of honour, match past and calisthenics display by pupils of police schools.
The event was graced by the host Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, his Bayelsa State counterpart, Seriake Dickson and a host of other elected public office holders.
