As the World Kidney Day is being celebrated today, a call has gone to the general public to imbibe lifestyle measures that could protect their kidneys from diseases that are capable of causing acute renal failure and making them victims of premature deaths.

The theme for this year is: ‘Kidneys for Life, Stop Acute Kidney Injury.’
A Consultant Nephrologists, Dr. Ebun Bangboye of St-Nicolas Hospital, Lagos who made the appeal at a recent workshop organised by Kidney Consultants International (KCI) expressed concern that Acute Renal Failure has since become one of the ailments for which people visit the health institution.

According to the expert, kidney failure has increased the hospital visits of the public and unlike before, young children are now diagnosed with kidney failure and therefore the public should be wary of what they consume and also regulate their lifestyles to ensure kidneys that can last for a life time.

He said the use of certain concoction from alternative medicine may have been affecting the kidneys of the people, noting that shortly after the exhibition of some traditional medicines, the experience is always that there are usually an upsurge in the number of people presenting cases of renal failure.

Bamgboye noted that research has shown that the use of bleaching creams for those who like to change their colour from black to light complexion may cause kidney failure as such creams contain mercury that is strong to penetrate the skin to the kidney and destroy it.

He also said for those who suffer hypertension and diabetes, they should ensure that they visit their doctors to keep both under control, as it has been found that when both are uncontrolled, it can lead to kidney failure.

The director of operation at KCI, Mr. Adebayo Shokunbi said the event was an initiative of the International Federation of Kidney Foundation (IFKF), “to whom we belong as council members, and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) who declared the second Thursday in March for the celebration.”

‘’It is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of our kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health and social problems worldwide. So far, we have recorded outstanding success with the last celebrations which we have been privileged to be part of since 2007.’’

“In celebrating the event this year, we plan to start a walk at the sports Club Abeokuta. The walk will take us through the Omida, Ibara and Oke-ilewo axis. We have an educative talk and preventive screenings at the termination point at the same venue. The Abeokuta Rotary Club partners with us in this regard.
