4 feared dead in varsity students’ protest

FOUR students of Nasarawa State University, Lafia, were, on Monday, allegedly shot dead by security operatives during a protest over water scarcity in the institution.

The victims were among the hundreds of students who protested against the scarcity of water and power cut in the institution.

“During the protest, some soldiers invaded the school and started firing shots which left four students dead,” a witness said.

Spokesman for the state police command, Michael Ada, confirmed the killing but denied they were shot by police officers.

He said the state commissioner of police had visited the scene.

Nigerian Tribune was at the scene of the inciden and reports that the students barricaded the road from Keffi roundabout to the main entrance of the university as well as the students’ village popularly known as Angwan Lambo and High Court and others areas, trapped down travelers who were coming from Abuja, Kano and Kaduna to the Eastern parts of the country.

Some students who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune under the condition of anonymity said that since the resumption of the first semester, water has been a major problem in the institution.

Speaking on the issue, the President of Students Union Government ( SUG),  Mr. Rabiu Tijani Omameh,  said since about three weeks ago, the students have not been having water on the campus, as according to him, “water is life without which we cannot continue with our education and it will make the environment harsh and hectic for us.”
