Strange Ailment Hits Sokoto, Kills 7, Afflicts 60 Others

Tragedy has struck Sokoto as no fewer than seven people are feared dead from a strange ailment suspected to be cerebral spinal meningitis, while over 60 others are affected in Jabo village of Tambuwal LGA.
The ailment is suspected to have resulted from the sudden rise in temperature in the area.
The ailment which led to instant isolation of affected victims to a rafter tent at the outskirts of the community by villagers who were afraid that it could be a communicable disease.
A villager, Sani Musa, said those affected by the ailment had been ostracised from the village and that he had simply gone there to sympathize with one of his relatives who was also affected, before he eventually got affected, too.

Sani who was given treatment for three days before recovering told Leadership: “I went to see my relative at the affected victim’s camp outside the village and when I came back I went to sleep that night, but I never knew what transpired, only that I saw myself here after regaining consciousness.”
A relative of Sani, while narrating how Sani Musa was brought to the victims’ camp, told Leadership that he was found lying motionless after he returned from the camp.
According to him, all parts his body, especially his neck, joints and legs, were stiff: “He was almost dead when we brought him to this camp. We carried him like a dead person because he couldn’t move any part of his body”.
When Leadership entered the camp, about 14 victims lay on mats, with some still unconscious while others were receiving medical attention from a doctor.
Confirming the ailment, Abubakar Muhammed Dogon Daji, an officer of Jabo Primary Health Centre, told Leadership at the ostracised victims’ camp in Jabo that no fewer than 67 patients had so far been afflicted, noting that the figure could rise.
The director, Medical Services, Ministry of Health, Dr. Haliru Alhasan, told Leadership that his men were still in the field, as such he could not confirm the number of victims yet.
